highlights the potential misuse of USB flash drives to breach security ENISA Jun08
Written by CONSEN
25 June 2008
Recently ENISA published a report which highlights the potential misuse of USB flash drives to breach security of corporate data or introduce malicious code.

The paper gives a brief outline of the corporate data which is susceptible to security breaches/incidents, and highlights potential risks associated with the innocent use of USB flash drives by employees of enterprises and also other less legitimate purposes such as smuggling information out of the company.

Furthermore, it lists good practice guidelines which aim at helping readers to overcome obstacles within their organisations.

The first step is to set clear security policies and make employees aware of them.

The target audience is IT staff, in particular IT managers and professionals, to ensure the ability to secure information on the network as well as the opportunity to manage data which enter and leave the company via these mobile devices.

It also targets corporate end-users in general, to raise awareness of the risks related to the use of USB flash drives.

The full report is available at:

Safety and Security Systems in Europe 2008

The 3rd Information and Partnering Forum will take place on 19th - 20th June 2008 in Potsdam.

Security related research is an important building block to save freedom, security and justice in Europe. It also contributes to the development of technologies and capabilities to support other European policies in areas such as transport, civil protection, energy, environment and health. In 2007 security research has entered the EU domain with its admission to the 7th Framework Programme for Research and Development (FP7). The EU Member States have earmarked a total of € 1.4 billion for funding this theme over the duration of FP7 from 2007-2013.

To improve the competitiveness of the European security industry, co-operation and strategic partnerships among research, science and industry in Europe have to be fostered. In 2006 the Innovation Relay Centre (IRC) Northern Germany established the Forum on “Safety and Security Systems in Europe” (S3) to provide an information exchange and networking platform for the safety & security community.

During the two-day conference thematic sessions will cover new developments in main fields of technology. As usual the new Enterprise Europe Network Berlin-Brandenburg (formely IRC Northern Germany) offers a Pre-Arranged Meeting Service to stimulate the building of transnational research or technology transfer partnerships during the event. For the first time the S3-Forum 2008 includes a demonstration session for prototypes. Especially small and medium technology enterprises engaged in different positions of the value chain of security products are invited to participate and to present their ideas.
