SMEs and Research Programmes in Security at European or national level

Security research under FP7 has been earmarked € 1.4 billion in EU funds over the programme’s seven years duration (2007-2013) favouring cross-border research which brings together partners from academia, research institutions, industry and end-users with the purpose of creating a  certain synergy and critical mass.

On the other side the importance of security is also related to its cross- fertilization.

European efforts seek to improve the security of citizens, protect infrastructures and utilities, develop intelligent surveillance and border security, enhance Europe’s crisis-management capabilities, improve the integration and interoperability of systems.

For these reasons, FP7’s security theme integrates other important themes such as for example ICT.

SECURE-FORCE, a project funded by the European Commission, and supported by Enterprise Europe Network, organizes a half day workshop with the purpose of  illustrating the lessons learnt in the involvement of European Companies in FP6 and FP7 programmes through the direct experience of successful proposals.

The workshop will also present the new FP7 ICT call with deadline on April 1st 2009.

The event is addressed to SMEs, large companies, Universities or Research Centres that are involved in FP7 research projects or willing to participate and to Regional Development Agencies that provide support in FP7 project proposal.

In Europe, SMEs record an over-proportional 82% of all occupational injuries. Moreover, as the new German Social Code points out, "accident insurers must take any appropriate measures to prevent industrial accidents, occupational diseases and work-related health risks and ensure that effective first aid is available."

Good security as a Business enabler ...
A winning driver to ensure the success of a technology !

The increasing complexity and rapid development of new systems and networks, the sophistication of changing threats, and the presence of intrinsic vulnerabilities present demanding challenges for the Information society in its efforts to secure Information and Communications Technology (ICT) systems and networks against the threats and related risks to which they are subject.
To minimise exposure to risks, Security must be built in from the beginning when designing new architectures, and not added on at a later stage as an optional feature.
Security standards, sometimes in support of legislative actions, are essential to ensure interoperability between products using the same security mechanisms, to provide globally acceptable security metrics, as well as to ensure an adequate level of security for these products. This leads to a more secure and profitable environment for the industrial sector from SME to large global companies, as well as benefits for governmental organisations, research bodies and universities.

The annual ETSI Security Workshop has become the greatest annual international security standardisation workshop, bringing together international Standards Developing Organisations (SDOs) and security experts to discuss recent developments, share knowledge, identify gaps and co-ordinate on future actions and work areas.

The workshop will include overviews of the work being done in the area of security across standards and technical bodies, along with presentations from major organisations involved in security initiatives.
Participants in the workshop will:

  • Assess and spotlight ongoing work on ICT security standards
  • Localise the gaps and duplication in security standardization
  • Start to define new work areas

European maritime surveillance needs greater integration PDF Imprimir a/e

In a report published today, the European Commission takes the first step towards establishing a comprehensive strategy for integrated maritime surveillance for Europe. The report, in the form of a Commission Staff Working Document, describes the current state of play as regards the surveillance, monitoring, tracking, identification and reporting systems put in place by EU Member States and EU Agencies. It also identifies the next steps to be undertaken and the challenges to be resolved in order to achieve an integrated maritime surveillance network for Europe. Such an integrated and cross-sectoral network would provide essential added value for national authorities in handling a range of challenges, such as trafficking in drugs, arms and people, illegal fisheries, pollution, piracy and terrorism. Greater systems integration would also help national authorities in charge of surveillance operations become more efficient and reduce their operating costs over time.
